Cooking with (CBD) Cannabidiol

Thanks to Medical Marijuana more and more people are becoming aware of the potential benefits of consuming (CBD) Cannabidiol as part of their daily routine.

CBD can be consumed in a variety of mechanisms based on your individual preference, condition and circumstances. Vaping CBD oil, swallowing CBD capsules or rubbing a CBD ointment onto psoriatic skin are all perfectly valid options. 

…But, today we are going to teach you how you can add it to your favorite recipes, to create your own CBD edibles or infused foods. 

To help you, here are some tips that should prove beneficial when cooking with CBD:

If you are considering cooking with CBD oil, it is important that you understand some of the basic properties of the oil, as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

1. The chemical composition of CBD

CBD oil is quite different from other cooking oils, such as olive oil or vegetable oil and therefore must be used in a slightly different manner.

To start with, be careful with putting CBD oil over direct heat. This can cause the oil to lose terpenes, which are compounds that increase the medical effectiveness of the CBD. Also, the oil may taste bitter if it gets too hot. Constant stirring will help to keep the oil temperature down, plus it will distribute the oil more evenly throughout the food.

Some people enjoy the taste of CBD oil, while others find it to be overpowering. Until you get used to cooking with it, experiment with recipes that have the ability to absorb stronger flavors. Avoid delicate dishes that require a very light oil.

2. Mix CBD oil with other cooking oils

Another technique that works well for beginners is to try mixing the CBD oil with another oil that you are more familiar with. Once you have cooked with CBD oil for a while, you will begin to see what works well and what doesn’t.

You will then be able to tweak your recipes and your techniques so that your meals are delicious.

Most of the recipes that have been published for use with CBD oil focus on baked goods and sweets.

However, sweet dishes are not the only places where CBD oil can be used successfully. Savory dishes turn out just fine if you take the time to infuse the CBD oil into a fat- or oil-based ingredients, such as coconut oil, lard or butter.

In cooking terms, this procedure is known as emulsifying. It results in activating the CBD terpenes, which maximizes the health benefits.

In some recipes, it might be possible to substitute an alcoholic product, such as whiskey, rum or vodka, for the fat component. It is better to avoid beer and wine, though, because they are water-based and will not infuse the CBD oil in the same way that a fat component will. 

3. Temperature Matters 

When cooking with CBD Oil it is important to watch the temperature. CBD is sensitive to heat and light, so you would limit your CBD’s exposure to these as much as possible. 

Look for recipes that require an oven temperature of 365 degrees F or less, as CBD oil tends to evaporate at higher temperatures.

The overall quality of it will suffer if the heating of CBD somehow goes beyond 200 Fahrenheit. Avoiding exposing it to direct flame – especially flame.

The CBD is going to lose most of its terpenes and phytonutrients if you flame CBD beyond the recommend benchmark. These terpenes and phytonutrients are the ones that give CBD its healthy benefits.

4. Properly dosing your food

How much CBD oil to add depends on how many servings you’re cooking up. Simply multiply the recommended dosage by the number of servings.

For instance, if you’re making a batch of a dozen brownies, then multiply the recommended dosage by 12 and add that to your recipe.

So if the recommended dosage is 2 drops, add 24 drops into the recipe.

5. Create/Use CBD Butter with CBD Isolate

If you want to stick with butter for your recipe, you can easily use CBD crystal isolate to make your own CBD butter. You can make as much CBD butter as you want and save it for adding to your favorite recipes.

Simply melt some butter in a saucepan, add CBD isolate, and simmer. CBD starts to evaporate above 320°F, so use lower cooking temperatures.

A good rule of thumb is your butter should be bubbling a little, but not be at a rolling boil. Let it simmer for 10 minutes or so, then pour the butter into a clean glass container and put it in the fridge until you’re ready to cook with it.

The same method can also be used with any kind of vegetable oil such as coconut oil, olive oil, or even peanut butter.

When calculating how much CBD butter to use in your recipes, it’s important to know your final serving size, how many servings you’ll be making, how much butter is required in the recipe, and how much CBD is in your butter.

Let’s do some quick math. I’ll keep it easy.

Let’s say you already have a cup of CBD butter in your fridge to which you added 1,000 milligrams of CBD. Now, let’s say you want to make 20 CBD muffins, and your recipe calls for a half a cup of butter.

Since your cup of butter had 1,000 milligrams of CBD, half a cup is going to have 500 milligrams. Divide that 500 milligrams of CBD by 20 servings and you get 25 milligrams of CBD in every delicious CBD-infused muffin.
